For the last few months, I’ve been constantly testing different types of monitor arms, from simple budget options to more advanced designs, trying to find out how much of a difference they actually make when it comes to ergonomics and everyday desk use.

And today, I’m starting with the AOC AM400PLUS, one of the latest additions to AOC’s accessories lineup. It’s a monitor arm designed to free up desk space, improve monitor positioning, and give you considerably more flexibility than a traditional monitor stand.

But as always, specifications and marketing claims only tell part of the story. What really matters is how it performs in everyday use.

So, without further ado, let’s put the AOC AM400PLUS to the test and find out whether it’s actually worth the investment.

Delivery and Unboxing

The AOC AM400PLUS arrived in a relatively compact cardboard box, surprisingly smaller than I expected considering everything packed inside. The presentation is simple, with the outside giving you a quick overview of the arm and its main features.

My box arrived with a few dents and some visible damage around the edges, but thankfully everything inside was perfectly fine. The main components are securely held in place by moulded cardboard inserts, with individual parts wrapped in plastic for additional protection.

Inside, you get the monitor arm, desk and VESA mounting hardware, screws, Allen keys, and the user manual. Everything required for the different mounting options is included.

One thing I liked is that there isn’t much unnecessary packaging, with AOC using moulded cardboard rather than large amounts of foam.

However, I would still like to see some of the plastic bags replaced with paper-based protective wrapping, similar to what brands such as LETZ use. It would help reduce plastic while still keeping the components protected.

As far as first impressions go, the AM400PLUS feels surprisingly substantial. There’s a reassuring amount of weight to the main components, and everything feels solid and well put together.

Installation & Setup

Installation was surprisingly easy. The different sections of the AM400PLUS connected together without any hassle, and it took me less than two minutes to assemble the main arm. AOC also includes the required Allen key, so no additional tools were needed.

One small detail that caught my attention was the grease applied to the connecting joints. This is something I haven’t noticed on other monitor arms I’ve tested, not even on the more premium Vernal dual monitor arm. AOC has also added plastic washers between the moving sections to help prevent metal-on-metal contact and protect the finish over time.

Another feature I really liked is the small transparent window on the upper arm. It shows a red indicator that moves as you adjust the spring tension, giving you a useful visual reference rather than simply turning the Allen key and guessing.

Attaching the monitor bracket was equally straightforward. I used the included knurled thumbscrews, which can be tightened by hand without a screwdriver.

Mounting the arm to the desk was just as simple. Once tightened, the clamp felt secure and stable, and I haven’t noticed it working itself loose during testing.

The instructions are also detailed and easy to follow, even if you’re not particularly technical. AOC also provides video installation guides online if you prefer watching the process rather than following the manual.

Build Quality & Design

Moving on to build quality, the AOC AM400PLUS feels really solid. There is very little about the arm that feels cheap or flimsy, and once everything is assembled, the different sections fit together tightly with no obvious unwanted movement.

The AM400PLUS is designed to support monitors weighing up to 9kg, with AOC recommending it for displays up to 34 inches. To be fair, I was actually a little surprised by that 9kg limit. Judging purely by how substantial the arm feels in hand, I was expecting the maximum supported weight to be slightly higher.

That being said, weight limits exist for a reason, and I would always stick within AOC’s recommended specifications rather than trying to find out where the actual limit is. From a build quality perspective, I have very little to complain about. The AM400PLUS feels reassuringly sturdy.

Design-wise, AOC has done a good job of keeping things relatively clean and minimal. The AM400PLUS is available in four different colour options, giving you some flexibility to match it with the rest of your setup. I went with the white version because it matches nicely with the mini portable desk I’m currently using.

The white finish gives the arm a clean and modern appearance without making it overly flashy, while the AOC branding is subtle enough that it doesn’t dominate the setup.

I also like how AOC has incorporated some functional elements into the design. The transparent spring tension window is a good example. It adds a small visual detail while also serving a genuinely useful purpose.

Adjustability & Range of Motion

When it comes to adjustability, this is probably one of the areas where I’ve been most impressed with the AOC AM400PLUS. On paper, there are plenty of numbers to talk about, but after actually using the arm, it’s the freedom you have to position the monitor that makes the biggest difference.

According to AOC, the arm can reach a maximum height of 495mm, with around 250mm of height adjustment, while the arm itself can extend forward by approximately 455mm.

In everyday use, that’s more than enough adjustment for my setup. I can push the monitor right back when I want more desk space, but I can also bring it considerably closer when I’m working on something that requires a bit more attention.

You also get 15° of downward tilt and up to 90° upward tilt, 90° of swivel in either direction, and a full 360° of rotation, so you’re definitely not limited when it comes to finding the right position. The 360° rotation also means you can quickly switch between landscape and portrait orientation.

Once I had the spring tension correctly adjusted for my monitor, movement felt smooth and surprisingly effortless.

I can move the display up or down, pull it towards me or push it away without feeling like I’m fighting against the arm. More importantly, once I find the position I want, I can simply let go, and the monitor stays there.

This is also where the small tension indicator becomes genuinely useful. When you’re initially setting everything up, you have a visual reference while adjusting the spring rather than repeatedly turning the Allen key and guessing.

AOC uses a mechanical spring system rather than a gas spring, and according to the company, the mechanism has been tested through more than 30,000 movement cycles.

Obviously, I haven’t moved my monitor 30,000 times, and I’m certainly not going to sit there and try, but it’s reassuring to see some durability testing behind the mechanism.

For me, that’s exactly how a monitor arm should work. You shouldn’t really have to think about it.

Performance Over Time

At this point, I have used the AOC AM400PLUS for over 500 hours, which has given me plenty of time to see how it performs beyond those initial first impressions.

One of the main things I wanted to keep an eye on was the spring mechanism. After more than 500 hours, I haven’t noticed any significant loss of tension or the monitor slowly dropping. Movement still feels smooth, and once I position the monitor, it stays where I want it.

One thing I’ve particularly started to love is just how compact and practical the AM400PLUS is. I regularly take my monitor from my main desk and move the setup over to my portable standing desk.

For someone like me who is constantly changing and testing different setups, that flexibility has been genuinely useful.

The desk mount has also remained secure without needing constant retightening, while the cable management covers and other components have held up well throughout my testing.

Of course, 500 hours can’t tell me how the AM400PLUS will perform after several years, but it is enough time for some early weaknesses to start showing. So far, I haven’t experienced any significant sagging, loosening, or deterioration.

Value for Money

When it comes to value for money, I think this is where the AOC AM400PLUS starts to make a lot of sense.

Monitor arms are one of those products where you can spend surprisingly little or quite a lot, and after testing a few of them, I’ve found that price doesn’t always tell you how good the actual experience will be.

With the AM400PLUS, you’re getting a solid mechanical spring system, a good range of adjustment, integrated cable management, easy installation, and support for monitors up to 34 inches and 9kg.

There are certainly cheaper monitor arms available, and there are also considerably more expensive premium options. But based on my experience, I don’t feel like the AM400PLUS is missing anything particularly important for a normal single monitor setup.

You also have to consider who this product is aimed at. The AM400PLUS isn’t necessarily for someone simply looking for the cheapest possible way to get their monitor off the desk. It’s better suited to someone who cares about ergonomics, adjustability, and creating a cleaner, more flexible workspace.

Is It Worth It?

After more than 500 hours of testing, I think the AOC AM400PLUS has proven itself to be a very capable monitor arm.

What I like most is that AOC has kept things simple. Installation is straightforward, the build quality feels solid, there’s plenty of adjustment available, and once the spring tension is set correctly, moving the monitor feels smooth and effortless.

I’ve also come to appreciate some of the smaller details, such as the tension indicator, knurled thumbscrews, good quality cable management, and surprisingly compact design. Being able to easily move my monitor between my main desk and portable standing desk has made it particularly useful for the way I work.

Of course, it’s not designed for the biggest or heaviest monitors, with support limited to 34 inches and 9kg, so this is something you’ll need to consider before buying.

But if your monitor falls within those specifications and you’re looking to improve your ergonomics, free up desk space, and have more control over your monitor position, the AOC AM400PLUS is definitely worth considering.
